In practice that means identifying why a behavior occurs, then teaching a more effective alternative.<\/p>\n<p>We begin with an assessment: your child preferences, current skill level, and the function of the behaviors that concern you. From there we set individualized, measurable goals and teach them in graded steps, reinforcing progress so that new skills are maintained.<\/p>\n<p>Skills are taught in the settings where they are needed, at home, at school and in the community, so that they generalize. Progress is recorded at every session, and the plan is revised when the data indicate it should be.<\/p>\n<div class=\"sfg-note\"><span class=\"sfg-kicker\">What ABA is not<\/span><\/p>\n<ul class=\"sfg-x\">\n<li>It is not intended to make a child indistinguishable from peers.<\/li>\n<li>It is not punitive, and it is not limited to table-top drills.<\/li>\n<li>It is not delivered without the family.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Ethical practice centers the child dignity and assent, and the family priorities. The objective is communication, autonomy and participation.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"sfg-sec\">\n<h2 id=\"signs\">When an evaluation is warranted<\/h2>\n<ul class=\"sfg-check\">\n<li>Difficulty requesting or expressing needs, with resulting frustration.<\/li>\n<li>Marked distress around transitions or changes in routine.<\/li>\n<li>Limited engagement in play or interaction with peers.<\/li>\n<li>Daily routines such as dressing, mealtimes or sleep onset are consistently disrupted.<\/li>\n<li>Behaviors that present a safety risk to your child or to others.<\/li>\n<li>An autism diagnosis, or a physician referral for ABA.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>A diagnosis is not required in order to request an evaluation.
